Welcome: Would You Rather – Helper Edition

Kids move side-to-side for each choice. ~4 min.

• Help clean up a HUGE mess you made OR a tiny mess somebody ELSE made?
• Give away your last cookie OR give away your seat on the bus?
• Help a friend you LOVE OR help somebody you barely know?
• Help when everyone is WATCHING OR help when NOBODY will ever find out?
• Final: KNOW the right thing to do OR actually DO it — even when it makes you late?

That last one is the whole lesson. Today a very smart man asked Jesus a question — and Jesus answered him with a STORY. A story about a road, a robbery, and three men who all saw the SAME hurt person. Two of them kept walking. One of them STOPPED.

Big Idea: Loving my neighbor means anyone who needs me, not just the people I like.

Jesus, thank You for stopping for us when we were hurt and could not help ourselves. Open our eyes today to see people the way You see them. Give us brave hands that help. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Where We're Going

For the next three weeks we are doing something FUN. We're reading the stories JESUS told. (Hold up three fingers!) Not stories ABOUT Jesus — stories He made UP, on purpose, to teach one big thing. He called them PARABLES.

Why do you think Jesus told stories instead of just listing rules? (Because stories stick! You remember a story years after you forget a rule.)

Here's the rule for a parable: look for the ONE big idea. Today's story has one, and it starts with a man trying to make himself look good in front of a crowd.

The Trick Question (Luke 10:25–29)

• The Expert: A lawyer stood up. Not the kind in a courtroom — this man's whole JOB was memorizing God's law. He knew more Bible verses than anybody in the room. (Stand up tall — straighten an imaginary tie!)
• The Test: He wasn't really asking. He was TESTING Jesus. "Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" Everybody leaned in. (Lean in!)
• Jesus Flips It: Jesus didn't answer. He asked the man a question BACK: "What's written in the law? How do you read it?" (Point at a kid — "You tell ME!")
• He Nailed It: The man answered PERFECTLY: love God with ALL your heart — and love your NEIGHBOR as YOURSELF. Jesus said, "You have answered right. DO this, and you shall live." Did you hear that word? DO. (Tap your palm — DO!)
• The Wiggle: But the man wanted to look good, so he tried to shrink the rule. "And WHO is my neighbour?" He was hoping Jesus would say, "Oh, just the people next door. Just your friends." (Make a tiny box with your hands!)
• Memorable Hook: Repeat with me — "Know it — SHOW it!" (Tap your head — then hold out both hands!)

Did the lawyer know the right answer? (Yes! He got it perfect!)

So what was he still missing? (He knew it in his HEAD but he wasn't DOING it!)

The Man Who Stopped (Luke 10:30–37)

• The Road: Jesus said: a man was walking from Jerusalem down to Jericho. That road was STEEP, ROCKY, and famous for robbers hiding in the rocks. (Walk fingers down a steep hill!)
• The Robbery: Robbers JUMPED him. They took his clothes, they beat him, and they left him half dead in the ditch. (Everyone gasp!) He can't stand. He can't call out. He can't help himself AT ALL.
• Two Men Walk Past: A priest came down the road — a CHURCH man — saw him, and crossed to the OTHER side. (Walk in place, look away!) Then a Levite, a man who worked at the temple, did the exact SAME thing. Both of them KNEW the rule. Neither one STOPPED.
• The Wrong Guy Stops: Then a Samaritan came along. Now — Jews and Samaritans did NOT get along. This was the LAST person anybody expected to help. And he saw the man and had COMPASSION. (Hand over your heart!)
• What Love Costs: Watch what he DOES. He bandages the wounds. He pours on oil and wine. He puts the man on HIS OWN animal — so now the Samaritan is WALKING. He pays for a room. And he tells the innkeeper, "Whatever more you spend, I will pay you when I come back." (Count coins into someone's hand!) His hands, his time, his money, his ride.
• Memorable Hook: "Don't walk PAST — STOP and HELP!" (March in place — then FREEZE and reach down!)

Which of the three men was a neighbor to the hurt man? (The Samaritan — the one nobody expected!)

Jesus ended with three words: "Go, and do thou likewise." What does that mean for YOU tomorrow? (Let 2–3 kids answer with something real!)

Class Tie-In: Neighbor Cards

Everybody gets one index card. On the FRONT, write the name of one real person who needs help this week — someone at school, someone in your house, someone at church. On the BACK, write the ONE thing you are going to DO about it. Not "be nicer." Something you can actually do by Friday.

Who did you write down, and what are you going to DO? (Take 3–4 answers. Push gently on the vague ones: "What does that look like on Tuesday?")

Is the person you wrote down someone you already LIKE? (If every card says "my best friend" — read verse 33 again. The Samaritan helped his enemy.)

Our Response

Here's the part that got me. The priest and the Levite were not bad men. They didn't ROB anybody. They just... kept walking. (Walk in place!) You can hurt somebody by doing NOTHING at all.

And every single thing the Samaritan did COST him something. Time. Money. His own ride. That's how you know it was real love and not just a nice feeling. (Rub two fingers together — it cost something!)

My Response: "I will stop and help, even when it costs me something." (Stand up! Say it 3x — louder each time!)

Challenge: This week, do the thing on the BACK of your card. Then find one MORE person nobody else stopped for — the kid sitting alone, the new kid, the one everybody teases. Be the one who stops.

Close Wrap Up & Prayer

• What did the lawyer get RIGHT, and what did he still miss? (He knew the answer perfectly — he just wasn't DOING it!)
• How many men saw the hurt man, and how many stopped? (Three saw him — only ONE stopped!)
• Name two things the Samaritan gave up to help. (Time, money, his own animal, his plans — any two!)

Jesus never told that lawyer to go memorize MORE. He said, "GO, and do thou likewise." (Point at the door!) You already know enough to help somebody this week. The only question left is whether you'll STOP.

Closing Prayer: Jesus, thank You for being the One who stopped for us. Help us see the people everybody else walks past. Make us the kind of kids who don't just KNOW what's right — we DO it. Fill us with Your Spirit so our hands move when our hearts feel something. In Jesus' name, Amen.
