Lesson 02 — One Sheep Missing

Hold onto that last one. Today Jesus tells a story about a shepherd with a hundred sheep — and ONE of them wanders off. And what that shepherd does next tells you EXACTLY how God feels about you.

Recap & Connection
Last week a man was beat up in a ditch and everybody walked past — until one man STOPPED. (Freeze and reach down!) We said love is something you DO with your hands and your time and your money.
Did anybody actually DO the thing on the back of their card this week? (Take 2–3 answers. Celebrate loudly!)
Today Jesus takes it one step FURTHER. Last week love stopped for somebody it TRIPPED over. Today love goes out into the dark to FIND somebody who isn't even on the road anymore.
The Grumble (Luke 15:1–2)
- The Crowd: Luke says the tax collectors and "sinners" came NEAR to Jesus to hear Him. These were the people nobody invited anywhere. Cheaters. Outsiders. The ones other people whispered about. (Lean in like you're listening hard!)
- The Whisper: And the religious leaders started MURMURING. (Whisper-grumble to your neighbor!) "This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them." They meant it as an INSULT.
- The Best Insult Ever: But listen to what they actually said about Jesus: He WELCOMES sinners. He EATS with them. (Big smile!) That's not an insult — that's the GOSPEL! That's the best thing anybody ever said about Him!
- Why It Bugged Them: Those leaders thought God only liked CLEAN people. Show up perfect, and God is happy. So a Jesus who sat down to dinner with the messy ones broke their whole idea of God. (Cross arms and frown!)
- Memorable Hook: Repeat with me — "Jesus WELCOMES — and that's GOOD NEWS!" (Arms wide open — then two thumbs up!)
Who was coming to listen to Jesus? (Tax collectors and sinners — the people nobody else wanted!)
Why did that make the religious leaders angry? (They thought God only wanted clean, perfect people!)
UP: Jesus answers the grumble with a story instead of an argument. Worth noticing out loud — He defends the people being looked down on, not His own reputation.
Ninety-Nine and One (Luke 15:3–7)
- Do the Math: Jesus said: what man having a hundred sheep, if he loses ONE, doesn't leave the ninety-nine and go after the one that is lost UNTIL HE FINDS IT? (Count on fingers — 99 is a LOT!) Ninety-nine is a great day! Most people would call that good enough.
- Not Good Enough: But the shepherd doesn't count what he HAS. He notices what's MISSING. (Look all around the room — where is it?!) One sheep. Out in the dark. Scared. Stuck somewhere it can't get out of.
- Until: Here's the strongest word in the whole story — he searches "UNTIL he find it." (Say UNTIL loud!) Not until he gets tired. Not until it gets dark. Not until the sheep deserves it. UNTIL. HE. FINDS. IT.
- Carried Home: And when he finds it, he doesn't yell at it. He doesn't drag it. He lays it on his SHOULDERS, REJOICING — and carries it all the way home. (Hoist an imaginary sheep onto your shoulders!) The lost sheep didn't walk back. It got CARRIED.
- The Party: Then he calls his friends and neighbors: "Rejoice WITH me — I found my sheep!" (Everybody cheer!) And Jesus says heaven throws that exact party over ONE person who turns back to God.
- Memorable Hook: "He didn't WAIT — He WENT!" (Sit still and tap your foot — then march hard in place!)
How many sheep did the shepherd already have? And was that enough for him? (Ninety-nine — and NO, he wanted the one!)
Did the lost sheep find its own way home? (No! It got CARRIED on the shepherd's shoulders!)
UP: Don't let this land as "God likes you." Land it as: God MOVED. He came to where the sheep was. That's the whole story of Jesus — God did not stay put and wait for us to climb up. Tie it to being carried: nobody is saved by finding their own way back.
Class Tie-In: Find the Sheep
Before class, hide ONE paper sheep somewhere in the room — behind a chair, under a table, high on a shelf. Now everybody stands up and looks for it. Nobody sits back down until it is FOUND. (Let it take a minute. Let it get a little frustrating!)
How did it feel when we couldn't find it yet? (Annoying! Hard! You wanted to give up!)
What did we all do the second somebody found it? (YELLED! Celebrated! That's the party in verse 7!)
Action cue: Hold the sheep up. "Nobody in here said 'let's just quit — we have plenty of other stuff.' That's exactly how God feels about the one who's missing. And one day, that one was YOU."
Our Response
Some of you feel like the ninety-nine — safe, been here forever, nothing special. And some of you feel like the one. Far off. Messed up. Sure that God counted you out. (Hold up one finger!) Here's the truth: heaven is not throwing a party over the ninety-nine. It's throwing one over the ONE.
And you don't have to crawl back on your own. The shepherd CARRIES the sheep home. (Shoulders again!) All the sheep had to do was be found.
My Response: "I will thank God for coming after me, and help Him look for others." (Stand up! Say it 3x — louder each time!)
Challenge: Think of one kid who used to come to church and stopped. This week, go LOOKING. Text them. Sit by them at lunch. Invite them Sunday. Be the shepherd who noticed somebody was missing.
Close Wrap Up & Prayer
- Why were the religious leaders grumbling about Jesus? (Because He welcomed sinners and ate with them!)
- How long did the shepherd look for the lost sheep? (UNTIL he found it!)
- Who throws a party when one person turns back to God? (All of heaven does!)
If you ever wonder whether God notices you — remember that He is the kind of shepherd who leaves ninety-nine safe sheep in the field to walk out into the dark for ONE. (One finger up!) He is not annoyed that you got lost. He is already out looking.
Closing Prayer: Jesus, thank You for being the Shepherd who goes looking. Thank You for not giving up when we wander. Carry us home when we can't walk. And help us notice who's missing this week, and go get them. In Jesus' name, Amen.
