Welcome: Would You Rather – Garden Edition

Kids move side-to-side for each choice. ~4 min.

• Dig in the mud all day OR climb a tree all day?
• Grow a plant that shoots up in ONE day and dies OR grows slowly for ten years?
• Water somebody else's garden OR have somebody water yours?
• Plant a seed in a parking lot OR in good black dirt?
• Final: Hear something TRUE and forget it by Tuesday OR hear it and let it CHANGE you?

Today Jesus tells a story about a farmer throwing seed — and it lands in FOUR different places. Here's the twist: it's the SAME seed every time. Something else decides what grows.

Big Idea: The same word of God lands on every heart — what grows depends on the dirt.

Recap & Connection

Week one, a man STOPPED in the road for somebody everybody else walked past. Week two, a shepherd WENT OUT into the dark after one lost sheep. (Two fingers up!)

Did anybody go looking for a friend who stopped coming? (Take 2–3 answers. Make a big deal out of them!)

Today is our LAST story — and this one is about YOU. Not about somebody in a ditch or a sheep on a hill. This one asks: when God's word lands on your heart, what happens NEXT?

Four Kinds of Dirt (Mark 4:1–9)

• The Boat Pulpit: So many people crowded around Jesus that He got into a BOAT and pushed out onto the water so everybody on the shore could see Him. (Everybody shade your eyes and look out at the water!) Then He said: "Hearken! Behold, there went out a sower to sow."
• Dirt 1 — The Path: Some seed fell on the hard-packed WAY where everybody walked. It just sat there on top. (Stomp the floor — HARD!) Birds swooped down and ate it before it ever got in. (Flap and peck!)
• Dirt 2 — The Rocks: Some fell on rocky ground with barely any dirt on top. It sprang up FAST — (shoot both hands up!) — the fastest of all four! But the roots hit stone. When the sun came up, it WITHERED. (Wilt slowly to the floor!)
• Dirt 3 — The Thorns: Some fell where thorns were already growing. The seed sprouted, but so did the weeds — and the thorns CHOKED it. (Hands squeezing around your own throat — gently!) It never made one single grain.
• Dirt 4 — Good Ground: And some fell on GOOD ground. It grew UP. It grew DEEP. And it made thirty times, sixty times, a HUNDRED times what was planted. (Everybody stand up TALL and stretch!)
• Memorable Hook: Repeat with me — "Same SEED — different DIRT!" (Hold up one seed finger — then point at four spots on the floor!)

How many kinds of ground did the seed land on? (Four!)

Was there anything wrong with the SEED any of those times? (NO! Same seed every time — the dirt was different!)

What It Means (Mark 4:13–20)

• Jesus Explains: The disciples had no idea what He meant, so Jesus told them straight: "The sower soweth the WORD." The seed is God's word. The dirt is people's HEARTS. (Hand over your heart!)
• Hard Heart: The path is somebody who hears and it never sinks in — it bounces right off. Ever heard a truth and thought "yeah, whatever"? (Bounce a ball off the floor!) That's the path.
• Shallow Heart: The rocks are the kid who gets SUPER excited at church — hands up, crying, all in — and then Monday somebody makes fun of them and it's all gone by lunch. (Big excited face — then shrug!) Jesus said the problem was no ROOT.
• Crowded Heart: The thorns are the scariest one, because nothing bad happens. The kid just gets BUSY. Games, sports, phone, worry, stuff they want. (Pile imaginary things into your arms until you drop them!) Jesus said the cares of this world CHOKE the word. Nobody decides to quit — they just get crowded out.
• Good Heart: Good ground HEARS the word, RECEIVES it — takes it IN — and brings forth FRUIT. (Cup your hands and pull them to your chest!) Notice it's three steps, not one. Hear. Receive. Then fruit shows up.
• Memorable Hook: "Soft heart — GOOD fruit!" (Squish your hands soft — then hold up a big imaginary apple!)

Which dirt is the sneakiest, and why? (The thorns! Nothing bad happens — you just get too busy!)

What three things does good ground DO? (Hear it, receive it, and bring forth fruit!)

Class Tie-In: Four Cups

Set out four clear cups: one packed HARD with dirt pressed flat, one filled with GRAVEL, one with dirt and a tangle of weeds or crumpled paper thorns, and one with loose GOOD soil. Every kid gets a seed. Walk down the line and let them press their seed into whichever cup they think their heart looked like THIS week — no talking, no watching each other.

Without saying which cup you picked — what makes dirt go hard in the first place? (People walking on it over and over. Same with hearts.)

Can hard dirt ever become good ground? (YES — a farmer BREAKS it up. God does that too, if you let Him.)

Our Response

Here's the good news buried in this story: you are not STUCK as one kind of dirt. Dirt can't fix itself — but you're not dirt. You can ASK God to break up the hard parts and pull out the thorns. (Make a hoe-chopping motion!) Farmers do that to a field every single year.

And look at what good ground makes — thirty, sixty, a HUNDRED times more than was planted. (Arms wider each time!) God doesn't plant in you just so you'll have something. He plants so it SPREADS.

My Response: "I will keep my heart soft so God's word can grow in me." (Stand up! Say it 3x — louder each time!)

Challenge: Name the ONE thorn crowding you out — the game, the show, the worry, the phone. This week, cut it back by fifteen minutes and give those minutes to God instead. Fifteen minutes. Then see what grows.

Close Wrap Up & Prayer

• What is the seed in Jesus' story? (The word of God!)
• Which ground grew the FASTEST, and what happened to it? (The rocky ground — it withered, because it had no root!)
• What choked the seed in the thorny ground? (The cares of this world — just being too busy!)

Three weeks, three stories. A man who STOPPED. A shepherd who WENT LOOKING. And a farmer who keeps throwing good seed on every kind of dirt — including yours. (Throw imaginary seed across the room!) He never stops throwing. The only question is what your dirt does with it.

Closing Prayer: Jesus, thank You for never stopping the planting. Break up whatever has gone hard in us. Pull out the weeds we're too busy to notice. Give us deep roots so we don't wilt on Monday. And let what You plant in us grow big enough to feed somebody else. In Jesus' name, Amen.
